A Trip Through Paradis

If you like first hand history of Montana and Wyoming during the late 18 hundreds this book is it! Editor Bennett H. Stein takes frontiersman Andrew Garcia's words and brings to life what it was like to travel amoung the Indians and the very rough frontiersmen/cowboys of that era. Really ejoyed reading the descriptions of the countryside, indians, and other frontiersmen in the vernacular of Andrew Garcia. It was as if i was sitting with Mr. Garcia while he told me about places in Montana and Wyoming where there are now historical markers. i hope to find another copy of the paperback book so i can re-read it and share it with my children.

What A Great Book

This is a story of the Squaw Kid's (Andrew Garcia) journey from Bozeman to the Musselshell and back to the Missoula area in 1878. It is likely the most genuine history you will ever read about the pend d'Orielle, Nez Perce, and Blackfoot tribes of that era. It's a story of fortune gained and lost, love gained and lost, and hardship endured. He lived it, wrote about it, and we are lucky enough that Bennett Stein found his manuscript and managed to get it published. I can't say enough good words about this book -- it's just one of the best old west history books I've read, and I've read a number.

ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS "PROTESTANT TO CATHOLIC" TESTIMONIES

Scott Hahn (born 1957) is an ex-Presbyterian convert to Catholicism; he currently teaches at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, and has written many books such as Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots, Reasons to Believe: How to Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith, The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth, etc. His wife Kimberly has two Master's degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary; she has also written books such as Chosen and Cherished: Biblical Wisdom for Your Marriage.

They wrote in the Preface to this 1993 book, "The late Archbishop Fulton Sheen once wrote: 'There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Roman Catholic Church; there are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church." Both of us once thought that we belonged in the former group, only to discover that we were really in the latter. But once we saw the distinction, and where we really were, it slowly became apparent that we did not belong in either group. By then we were well on our way home. This book describes that journey. It is a narrative of how we discovered the Catholic Church to be God's covenant family." (Pg. xi)

Scott begins, "Baptized a Presbyterian, I was raised in a nominal Protestant home. Church and religion played a small role in my life and for my family, and then mostly for social reasons rather than any deep convictions." (Pg. 1) After the birth of their son, he muses, "I wondered, to what church will he belong, or his children and grandchildren? After all, I was pastoring a Presbyterian church that had split off from a splinter group (the Orthodox Presbyterian Church), which had in turn separated from another division (the Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A.), all in this century!" (Pg. 48)

He recalls, "I found a used bookstore that had bought out the library of a deceased priest who was also a well-known Scripture scholar. Over the next two years, I walked away with about thirty boxes of his theology books. I began intensely devouring these for five, six, sometimes even seven hours at night... For the first time, I was hearing Catholicism from the horse's mouth, so to speak." (Pg. 59-60) He notes that in his undergraduate studies, "In spite of my anti-Catholic outlook... no one could compare to Aquinas. I had naturally discounted anything distinctively Catholic in his writings... But I had devoured his philosophical writings, especially his metaphysics, eventually acquiring the rather odd and unlikely reputation for being an 'evangelical Thomist.'" (Pg. 101) He also found another used bookstore run by "a philanthropic old priest," and "For a few hundred dollars, then, I ended up with thousands of books... I found myself the owner of a personal library of Catholic theology, philosophy and history that a seminary would have been blessed to possess." (Pg. 101-102)

He states, "I could not figure out why it was that it seemed to be that Catholics worshipped Mary, even though I knew worship of Mary was clearly condemned by the Church. Then I got an insight: Protestants defined worship as songs, prayers, and a sermon. So when Catholics sang songs to Mary, petitioned Mary in prayer and preached about her, Protestants concluded she was being worshiped. But Catholics defined worship as the sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Jesus, and Catholics would never have offered a sacrifice of Mary nor to Mary on the altar." (Pg. 145) He adds, "When evangelical Protestants convert to the Catholic Church, they often enter into a kind of ecclesiastical 'culture shock.' They leave robust congregational singing, practical biblical preaching, a conservative pro-family political voice in the pulpit and a vital sense of community... In contrast, the average Catholic parish usually finds itself lacking in these areas... Kimberly and I both experienced this." (Pg. 165)

The conversion of Scott and Kimberly Hahn is a dramatic and powerful story. Anyone interested in Catholicism, Catholic/Protestant dialogue, or spiritual biographies will find this "must reading."

Love my Betty Crocker Cookbook!

I purchased this as a used cookbook, but it apparently never was used, is in excellent condition. My original 1955 Betty Crocker cookbook was my favorite through the years and was so worn out that I put contact paper over the cover in the 70's and that had worn and peeled. It was so ugly I wanted a nicer, cleaner looking one. I have lots of other cookbooks and get recipes from the internet frequently, but I still go back to this a lot. I trust that anything I cook from it will turn out well. This is fully illustrated and ring bound with section tabs and lots of helpful tips, substitutions, and measurement conversions. If you buy one, be sure to get a ring bound one so it will easily lie open flat.

This item arrived well-packaged. The content of the book was just what I wanted. My only disappointment was that many or most pages were stuck together in the upper right hand sections as if something may have spilled on it at some point. Other than that, I am satisfied with this purchase.

I hope everyone reading this review are on the edge of their seats with an attitude of expectancy. Jesus is surely coming at any moment for His perfect Bride, the church who is ready and waiting for Him with their lamps full of the oil of the Holy Spirit, in excited anticipation. It is going to be much harder for the lukewarm church - those now wedded to this world and its entertainments - to make Heaven after the Rapture. For the most part, only those tortured and killed by the Antichrist for not accepting the mark of the beast will make it there.

May the Holy Name of Our Saviour Jesus Christ be forever praised !!!

I would read again...

These were my favorite books recommended to me by my mom when she was still with me. They were very interesting to me, I don't know if it is because I am a big horror movie buff or what -but definitely a good read. I don't know if I am so sure about what is written in the book anymore, but I did believe it at the time - mostly because I was young and my mom was very convincing.

The book helped to sway me more in that direction and I felt it educated me about the subject at the time

Either way a well written book and worth the read. I would read it again today even though I'm on the fence here because that subject interests me so much.

Doubtful

That's right! The contents of this book left me very doubtful about Jesus being present with the writer in hell. The Jesus I know just doesn't fit the bill for this really awkward situation that the writer finds herself. The way she explains his presence and the words used to describe his explanations to her just don't "feel" right. No proof or real validity to what I'm saying or feeling. My heart is just not feeling it. Besides, my book was purchased used and smells like it was used by a chain tobacco smoker blowing the smoke heavily on each and every page, which made the book, for me, that much harder to read.
