This neighborhood was developed by the first Americans to settle in New Orleans, and the fine old homes of the Garden District, bounded by Jackson and Louisiana avenues and St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street, preserve traces of the era of cotton and sugar empires, when grand antebellum plantations dominated the landscape.

The district owes its luxuriant vegetation to an 1816 flood caused by the overflowing Mississippi River. Although many plantations between Carrollton and the emerging American sector were destroyed, a rich deposit of alluvial silt created a very desirable feature for future development—higher ground. In the early 1830s Jacques Livaudais sold his sugarcane plantation, which was soon subdivided, later incorporated as the city of Lafayette and subsequently annexed to New Orleans, when it became known as the Garden District.

In addition to thriving indigenous and exotic plantings and magnolia trees rivaling oaks in size, the neighborhood covers 27 city blocks and boasts 200 residences in a variety of building styles, including Gothic, Greek Revival and Renaissance. Many homes are embellished with iron lacework, a hallmark of New Orleans architecture. Mark Twain loved to visit the Garden District and called it a place where “the mansions stand in the center of large grounds and rise, garlanded with roses, out of the midst of swelling masses of shining green foliage and many-colored blossoms. No houses could well be in better harmony with their surroundings, or more pleasing to the eye.”

Been there, done that type of walking tour

This tour isn't as good as the A Walking Tour of New Orleans - The French Quarter, Louisiana because you end up walking back and forth down many of the roads. Maybe it's because Garden District is harder to navigate in a smoother fashion, but there are times where you go all the way down one street, and then you have to turn around and go all the way back.

Otherwise, there are some helpful pictures that point out what you're supposed to be looking at in addition to some helpful text. The Garden District has less interesting history than the French Quarter, so most of the homes are only notable because of the architecture style or a notable celebrity in residence. One thing I learned though - Ann Rice seems to have owned half of the mansions in the Garden District at some point or another!

I don't expect much for $.99 (kindle version) but...

I expect at least clean copy without a bunch of typos, or a street name that wasn't even on our map. And just for kicks, I looked at the online Frommer's walking tour of the Garden District (which you can view and print out for free) and noticed that every one of the houses, and the order they're listed on the route, are identical. There is no index or rudimentary map (OK, for the price, a map might be asking a lot) which made navigating the short booklet a pain when we decided not to follow the suggested tour route. The descriptions of the homes are adequate given the price. For architectural history enthusiasts, I'd recommend a tour with a knowledgeable guide, or a beefier book. But hey, it costs a buck.

Although Leon Morris was well acquainted with the entire New Testament, one of his special interests was the gospel of John. His commentary, originally published in 1971, is still a classic. Sufficiently detailed to satisfy the serious student, it is also readable and never is pedantic. The introductory material is quite informative. Morris discusses the issues of authorship, date of composition, purpose, John's theology, and the place of authorship. What he says about John as the author of the Gospel that bears his name (a view he defends) is worth reading whether you agree with his conclusions or not.

Realistic portrayal of life during that time in Southern Afr

Having lived in Southern Africa and talked to people who had knowledge of those events this is a good account of what went on for a historical point of view. I would recommend reading the entire series. A very good read!

Robyn Ballantyne and her brother, Morris, have waited years to return to Africa. They are determined to locate their father, a missionary, who had disappeared within the African wilderness.

Following a map left by a madman, the siblings track their father's footsteps. Hope slowly fades from the duo. Even so, they continue onward through dense wilderness and fierce wildlife with little time to take in the area's rough beauty.

When they find themselves amid a horrible slave trade, Robyn and Morris split up. Both are being tracked and time is running out.

*** This is book one of four. I found it to be a bit long-winded at times, but well written and loaded with suspense. Definitely worth you time. ***

The beginning of the Ballentyne Saga......

Wilbur Smith is my favorite author, and "A Falcon Flies" is one of his best. You are introduced to the Ballentyne's, Maj. Zouga Ballentyne and his sister, Dr. Robin Ballentyne as they search Africa for their missing father, the famous missonary and anti-slavery cruscader Fuller Ballentyne and have the bad luck to travel to Africa on board the ship of Mungo St.John, who it turns out, is a infamous slave trader himself...With that breathless start, you would expect action and lots of it, and you won't be disappointed. Duels, attack by slave traders on the Ballentyne safari, and ship to ship battles with thundering broadsides are but some of what is in store for the reader. Smith has never been afraid to write a strong woman character, and Robin Ballentyne certainly qualifes, coming close to unsympathic, being saved mainly by her constant concern for human life, never hestiating to place her own in jepoardy to help the ill or injured, but always sure of being right and never hestiating to say so. Neither is Zouga perfect, being more concerned with making the expedition profitable,from gold and ivory, than finding his father.All of Wilbur Smith's books are of the "keep you up late reading it" variety but "Falcon" is ones of his best, which makes it one of THE best, period.....

Adult/High School-Brooks's title is based on the actual lead-mining village of Eyam, Derbyshire, whose inhabitants voluntarily quarantined themselves for a year when stricken with Bubonic Plague in 1665-1666. Anna Frith is widowed at 18 by a mining accident and is the mother of two young boys. Through her recollections, readers live through the year as her endurance and abilities are sorely tested. Anna works for the new young minister's wife, who teaches her to read and becomes more of a companion than a mistress. At her employers' suggestion, Anna takes in a boarder to help meet expenses. The man is a tailor and when a shipment of fabrics, apparently flea infested, is delivered from London-the plague is suddenly upon them. The minister convinces his flock to make the supreme sacrifice and arranges for food and supplies to be delivered to the outskirts of the hamlet. The story is a portrait of the best and worst in people faced with sorrow, terror, and death. Some succumb to madness, others display cowardice and hysteria, and a few look for solutions in murder or self-mutilation. Through it all, however, Anna grows in strength, abilities, and understanding as she faces the loss of her children, her friends, and her innocence, and takes on the tasks of an ever-dwindling populace. This is an excellently portrayed study of the wonder of human courage.

Emotionally charged, wonderful story telling

I really enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to visit the little village of Eyam, England (known as plague village) during my last European trip. I'm so glad I did and would recommend you visit. Based on a real town Eyam and an incredible decision made by the villagers during the plague year of 1666 Geraldine Brooks details the lives of fictional characters with emotional realism and beautiful writing. Personally the ending for me was totally ridiculous and ended absurdly but other than that I really enjoyed this book and its history.

Why the bizarre ending??

Like several reviewers, I would also suggest you stop reading the book at the point the Bradfords return and it is 'apple-picking time' again .
From that point you have my permission to imagine your own ending to the story , hopefully consistent with the main plot and time period. In my opinion a very good story went haywire for reasons unknown and tumbled into odd 'regency-like romance' territory. To be honest, I would have flung a 'book' against the wall, but since I was reading on my Kindle I quickly ruled that out. I do appreciate this author, and have read two other books by her. But I am sorely tempted to ask her "Why?"

Evocative tale

Presently on holidays on England, and about to visit the Peak District, setting for this novel, I decided to read this as background. I've read many of Brook's novels, but had missed this, first, one. And it is a great beginning to an illustrious writing career. Based on fact, she has woven an engaging tale of human reaction to adversity. It's instructive to think what our own reaction would have been to such a challenge.
