For centuries, the Menuhin line had been producing geniuses, yet the the elder Menuhins withheld the details of Yehudi’s exotic lineage. Although Rolfe, the son of Yaltah Menuhin, often focuses on his famous uncle, he has ventured beyond the Menuhin public image with an intimacy that only a Menuhin could bring to this family portrait. From the ghettos and pogroms of czarist Russia, to the settlements in Palestine at the turn of the century, to the Jewish communities in New York and San Francisco in the twenties. Rolfe takes the reader on his own personal odyssey into the past.

It is often a difficult and painful story, for The Menuhins is Rolfe’s search for his own place in the Menuhin tradition. He tells about the joys and frustrations of growing up a Menuhin: his flirtations with the Hassidic Judaism of his ancestors; his rejection by his grandfather, the volatile anti-Zionist; and his own discussions with Yehudi about everything from Mozart to the perils of white sugar to yoga and world peace.

About the Author
Lionel Menuhin Rolfe has been a working journalist since age 19 at newspapers including the Los Angeles Free Press, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle. He was ten-year editor of the B'nai Brith Messenger (the second oldest newspaper in Los Angeles) and an editor for Psychology Today, when the magazine was edited from the beach in a secluded community near San Diego. He is also the author of nine books, including the widely read Literary L.A. For more on the Menuhin family, his title include The Uncommon Friendship of Yaltah Menuhin and Willa Cather. At 70, he published The Misadventures of Ari Mendelsohn: A Mostly True Memoir of California Journalism. It is an effort to sum up the meaning of half a century of "professional" observation. Whatever answers he has, they are here. He is also anthologized in Unknown California, Classics and Contemporary Writing on California Culture, Society and Politics (Macmillan, 1985) and On Bohemia: The Code of the Self Exile (Transaction/Rutgers, 1990). He presents the adventures of Christopher Robin and friends as illustrations of organizational management and comments on the effectiveness of management decisions and actions taken by various inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood. The Stranger who comes to the wood to instruct Pooh and friends in management never really explains why the group-who, after all, accomplish quite a bit without consultants-needs such instruction. Nevertheless, the Stranger teaches them basic management principles, including such fundamental communication concepts as, "The information should be meaningful to the individual who is receiving it." Although this work offers few new ideas, the old ones are refreshingly and humbly presented. Recommended for public libraries.

Winnie-The-Pooh on Management:

I have read this book 3 times and passed it on to at least 4 different person in management positions. I have found this book to be one of the best books on how to effectively manage at work, home and in school. I teach a Study Skill class at a local State college and use this book in the last third of the semester. After my students have been introduced to survival skills for beginning students, ie Time Management, How to read a textbook, how to take notes, study for a test, etc. Roger's book gently shows students how to apply all the other parts of the course so that they may be successful in their college career and beyond. The students enjoy learning, because the book is not dry and dull as so many management theory books are. They retain the information at a higher rate than when I was using other books of this genre. I recommend this book to all I meet and speak with. It is truly a library keeper.

being a rather unconventional person, when I was recently promoted into a supervisory position at work I decided that it was time to Learn About Management...not wanting to go about in the same manner as others would I decided that this book would be a good way to get an idea as to what I now needed to do...while it is a little surreal to read agbout Pooh discussing various aspects of management with a Stranger the material that is presented is highly useful and entertainingly presented...highly reccommended for the person who doesnt enjoy reading the same dry books day in and day out, or try to keep up to date on the most recent management fads.

Good expetition, I mean expedition.

This audiobook covers the principles of management. It also includes a storyline and is very witty. I was somewhat sceptical prior to listening, but I am satisfied. I have used it once and know I will listen to it many more times in the future. If you want to improve your management techniques in a new way without getting bored, then you need to get this audiobook. It gets very boring listening to the same ol same old management books with no humor. I hope too see more audio books produced like this to keep it fresh.
