Profile of The Queen of the Pin Ups

The story of the 1950's Queen of Pin-Ups, Bettie Page, belies her image as the happy, smiling girl with the black hair and trademark pageboy cut posed in improbable costumes and controversial bondage poses which have kept her in the public eye, long after her era passed. But sadness bookended her years as a model.
Molested by her father and later gang-raped while living in New York, her early years invite the cliched "what led her to do that" response that people often have when it comes to anything they disapprove of. In her case, Foster says, the cliche could be true. Exhibitionism is a way of coping with sexual trauma and that may have guided Bettie.
But conditions worsened. After leaving her modeling career (1950-1957) and finding religion, she descended into madness, and wound up stabbing three people on two occasions and was institutionalized for extended periods. Even at the time of the book's writing and presumably up to her subsequent death at age 85, Bettie Page was under some supervision for paranoia schizophrenia.
In photos of her by Irving Klaw, Bunny Yeager, and others, she had a sunny smile and cheerful attitute that expressed a girl-next-door innocence despite nudity and semi-nudity. She was a Playboy centerfold and when she resurfaced, Hugh Hefner was among her strongest supporters.
Her career ended just after headline-hunting Senator Estes Kefauver subpoened Bettie and her photographer, Irving Klaw, for hearings on pornography. Klaw ran a business that offered photos of movie stars, then grew to include photos of models like Bettie, some to order, which led to bondage and fetish themes. For Bettie it was part of the job. You did a shoot and that included an hour of bondage or fetish photos.
Bettie was never called before the committee, though Irving had to sit through slanderous claims by Kefauver for doing something that was not illegal and his business was pretty much wrecked by the publicity.
As author, fantasist, and one-time men's magazine editor Harlan Ellison writes in his lead-off essay, whatever happened to Bettie after her modeling stint was incidental. The Bettie Page of the photogenic 50's are all that we need remember. After all, Humphrey Bogart will always be Rick Blaine whenever Casablanca fills the little screen, even though we know Bogie shriveled up and died of cancer 15 years or so later and that he was never actually Monsieur Rick anyway. Why should we expect more of Bettie? I'm not certain I agree but it's certainly a valid point.
Despite my curiosity about the real Bettie, I was saddened to discover the pain she lived with and couldn't overcome. As her looks faded and she gained weight, she became somewhat reclusive, so much so that when she did surface, she glossed over for a long time the homicidal middle-age madness that the author documents.
In fact, it was apparently the madness and periods of institutionalization that made her reclusive. In turn, the reclusiveness contributed to the idea that the camera-shy elderly lady who claimed to be the original Bettie Page was an imposter.
Even with the revival brought about by publication of the graphic novel The Rocketeer, in which the female lead was clearly in Bettie's image -- the Disney movie version downplayed the resemblance -- everyone was quick to cash in on her, while she was beset with legal problems, an agent whose help was, to say the least, questionable, and little else except for assistance from a few old friends like Hefner and what she could get autographing books and photos offered through a website.
A fascinating story.
