A SUMMARY OF ARGUMENTS "FOR" CHRISTIANITY, AND ANSWERS TO OBJECTIONS

Peter John Kreeft (born 1937) is a professor of philosophy at Boston College and The King's College, who has written other books such as Catholic Christianity: A Complete Catechism of Catholic Church Beliefs Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Between Heaven and Hell: A Dialog Somewhere Beyond Death with John F. Kennedy, C. S. Lewis & Aldous Huxley, etc. He is a convert to Catholicism. Ronald Tacelli (S.J.) is also a professor of philosophy at Boston College (although he was a student assistant when the book was first published). They also jointly wrote Handbook of Catholic Apologetics and Pocket Handbook of Christian Apologetics.

They wrote in the first chapter of this 1994 book, "We are writing this book because we have been beseiged with requests for it... students often ask us where they can find a book that lists, outlines or summarizes all the major arguments for all the major Christian teachings that are challenged by unbelievers today... and answers the strongest and commonest objections against these doctrines. We were amazed to find that no such book exists! There are thousands of books on apologetics... but not one of them summarizes apologetic arguments as Aquinas summarized theological arguments... This book is written to fill that vacuum." (Pg. 13)

They reply to the argument, "Why not have an endless series of caused causes stretching backward into the past?": "The argument is not concerned about the past... It is concerned with what exists RIGHT NOW... you are dependent on other things... So there must in that case exist something besides the universe of dependent things---something not dependent as they are... this need... cannot be met from within the imagined set. But obviously it HAS been met, since contingent beings exist. Therefore there is a source of being on which our material universe right now depends." (Pg. 52-53)

About such "proofs" for God, they admit the view "is compatible, for example, with Platonic idealism, and many other beliefs that orthodox Christians find terribly deficient. But this general religious view is incompatible with materialism, and with any view that banishes value from the ultimate objective nature of things. That is the important point." (Pg. 73) They acknowledge, "there are objections to all the arguments FOR theism, but ... these objections ... do not thereby DISprove God's existence... There are also alternative explanations for religious belief and experience, such as Freud's, but ... they would only provide an alternative hypothesis. There are also serious practical and personal objections against faith, such as observed wickedness and hypocrisy among believers... But these do not prove that God does not exist." (Pg. 122)

They explain, "Some readers may wonder why so much space has been devoted to attacking modernism... The reason is... Modernists have undermined faith far more effectively than atheists. The wolves in sheep's clothing have carried away many more sheep than the honest wolves... Jesus had only gentle words for honest skeptics and doubters like Thomas, but horribly hard words for religious teachers who caused the little ones who believed in him to stumble..." (Pg. 220)

In response to the question of how we could be happy in heaven if our loved ones were in hell, they suggest, "We know that there will be no sadness in heaven, though we may not know HOW God manages this... In whatever way God manages not to be sad, even though people he created and loves are in hell... we will learn from and share in this way. Somehow or other God manages it... It CAN be done, because it IS done: God does it... he will teach us how to do it." (Pg. 271)

This book is an excellent (from a generally Catholic perspective) summation of apologetic arguments, that will be of help to Christian students as well as others looking for such a summation.
